Smaller Indiana
I haven't been posting as much over at Smaller Indiana as I usually do... so today I figured I'd browse through and say hi. Much to my surprise, most of the front page conversations had just a few (1-5) comments. A year ago, you would see 14-16 comments on just about anything. There have been a couple of huge policy changes, and I'm curious if any of them are the cause of the apparent fall-off in engagement:

That’s right. Even with unemployment at 10%. What’s worse, most don’t understand WHY this is happening...
Let me clarify; I'm referring to white collar, degreed professionals. Gen Y, Gen X and Boomers. All of them.

I thought I'd take a minute to rant about why Indianapolis Big Bang isn't going to happen. There's a story I'd really, really like to tell and a few fingers I would like to point.
I'm not going to. Instead, I'm going to leave it with:
Well, we are less than 24 hours from crossing the finish line on Indiana's Favorite Blog. The question is, was it worth doing? Emotionally speaking, yes. Getting a ton of Hoosier blogs some attention was a great thing.
Like everything else on the web, you can't put a lot of stock in emotions, so you look to analytics to get the hard answers. Channeling my best Richard Dawson imitation:
By the way, I've been getting some great feedback on how to do the contest better next time. After this year's contest, we'll take a lot of it to heart:
- Robby Slaughter has a lot of valid points here, save the part about conflict of interest as his post was based on the assumption that Erik Deckers and Paul Lorinczi work for me at Professional Blog Service. Well, I sold ProBlog Service back in June to Erik and Paul. I'm not sure that Robby knew this when he wrote his article...
- Better Categories. Ok, we blew it on the categories.
- Nomination criteria. We were not as clear as we could have been.
That said, the outcome of the contest has been fantastic - lots of traffic to the blogs - and I'm sure many people have made some fantastic discoveries checking out the contestants.
It's been an amazing week for Linking Indiana and the Indiana's Favorite Blog contest. First, our traffic is up about 100%. Second, people who come to vote in Indiana's Favorite Blog are sticking around to read 5.63 more pages of content -- which is another very good thing.
Most important is that many Indiana blogs are getting more attention than ever.
